The NSW RFS wants people to evacuate from five large areas; the military leading the safety operation in Mallacoota after a tragic day in Victoria; emergency warnings in place in South Australia and fears of a worse to come in Tasmania.

What you need to know:

• More than 14,000 hectares have been destroyed in the Flinders Chase National Park, Kangaroo Island.
• Moss Vale Services Club is the main evacuation for NSW residents in Mittagong, Braemar and Wombeyan Caves Road.
• The first evacuees have been shipped out of East Victoria but the fires is still raging in that area.
• Patients in Shoalhaven hospital may transfer to the Illawarra as the bushfires spread.
