Wester Australian Industry Bodies Behind the Times on Energy

the reality of what is happening around the world: every year for the last 15 years the growth in renewable energy’s capacity has outstripped the growth in nuclear capacity, and last year investment in renewable energy over-took investment in nuclear and fossil fuelled energy combined. In 2010 world-wide cumulative installed capacity from wind turbines, biomass, waste-to-energy and solar power surpassed installed nuclear capacity for the first time in history.

Australia needs leadership on Climate Change action

This country can, if it so chooses, be a leader in the creation and production of renewable energy technology. There is great potential for Australia to develop a unique energy system tailored to suit this vast continent. And to do so we must break free of Australia’s inferiority complex and prove that we produce (and hopefully retain) some of the smartest scientists, business people and policy thinkers in the world. ……

Aim high on climate change actionABC The Drum, Amy Mullins, 29 April 11,   Carbon tax. Climate Change. These are terms that now trigger a collective mind-numbing effect on the electorate….. It seems that more and more Australians are willing to be complacent when it comes to taking action on climate change. How did we get to this state? And what is the real unacknowledged reason behind public disillusionment?…… Continue reading

Ranger Uranium Mine is out of control

Northern Territory News, Grusha Leeman, Tiwi 12 April 11, LAST night I went along to a public meeting to hear from Yvonne Margarula, senior traditional owner of the land on which the Ranger uranium mine operates.  She is very sad. The broken promises keep coming but the problems stay.

I don’t remember Ranger Mine ever being so out of control. The heavy wet season and inadequate investment in water management has giving us a brimming tailings dam and a mining pit full of toxic water.

Who would plan to spray strong acid on rock piles in Kakadu (a method never tested in the tropics)?  I suppose it will only be a matter of time before there is yet another acid spill on the pot-holed Arnhem Highway.

And who would extend by stealth deep under the old billabong and creek — as if it is exploring, but knowing it cannot mill the ore within the leased time?

Rio Tinto’s ERA, of course.

Yvonne has had enough, and so have I.

It’s time to start rehabilitation works.

Kakadu is a stupid place for a nuclearwastedump — let’s not make it any worse.

Nuclear power has suddenly gone from being part of the solution for future green energy to a dangerous relic of the cold-war era…..Australia’s refusal to build nuclear reactors looked irrational at the time, and might now end up looking prescient.
