The Country Liberal Party’s Nigel Scullion has praised the new federal Opposition Leader, Tony Abbott, for opening the nuclear discussion.

WA senator pushes benefits of nuclear industry
ABC News 4 Dec 09 A WA Liberal Senator, Mathias Cormann, is pushing the merits of Australia developing nuclear energy as part of a mix to reduce carbon emissions.
The WA Senator last week resigned from his parliamentary secretary position in protest at the emissions trading scheme…….
But, Mr Cormann was unable to say where waste would be buried.
“Longer term, very clearly we do have to find ways to store or to dispose of it in deep geological disposal arrangements but we have time for that and what we have to achieve right now is massive reductions in green house gas emissions,” he said………………..http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/12/04/2761513.htm
The WA Premier calls for a National Nuclear Authority ABC News By Peter Kennedy Dec 3 2009
The premier, Colin Barnett, has kicked along the nuclear energy debate, calling for the formation of a national Nuclear Power Authority. …
He says such a body should start planning for when nuclear power is ultimately needed, nominating a time frame of 20 years.
The premier says potential sites and related planning issues need to be sorted out well in advance.
But, his enthusiasm is at odds with the restrained approach of the Prime Minister.
Kevin Rudd has poured cold water on the nuclear push, challenging supporters of the move to nominate sites where they believe the stations should be located.
Mr Rudd was responding to the new Federal Opposition leader, Tony Abbott, who called for a fresh debate on the issue………..he says there are good environmental reasons.
“There is no doubt that nuclear power generation offers the most certain way of large scale reduction in green house gas emissions and it is competitive,” he says.
The premier’s bullish approach contrasts with a move by the Greens to ban uranium mining in WA.
