Australia’s biggest private renewable energy firm has attacked Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s environmental agenda, saying his green power target is at risk of failing.
Fairfax newspapers report that Michael Fraser, the managing director of energy firm AGL has labelled the Government’s approach a fraud that threatens the industry’s ability to meet the targets.
Mr Fraser’s concerns centre on the falling value of so-called energy certificates given to energy companies in return for building green power stations.
The value of the certificates has halved since the Government began giving them to consumers that have installed solar hot water systems and other products.
Mr Fraser’s told Fairfax his company won’t invest any money in the sector until the issue’s resolved including the creation of new wind farms.
