Beware of slick anti-science Climate Denialists

It’s a huge problem for Australian democracy and political debate in general.

Quiggin: Why I won’t debate Lord Monckton by John Quiggin Crikey 15 Jan 2010 Lord Christopher Monckton believes the hypothesis of human-caused global warming is a fraud, extended as part of a plot to destroy the world economy and establish a communist world government…………

Monckton is touring Australia accompanied by Professor Ian Plimer, only marginally more circumspect, describing mainstream scientists as fraudulent “climate comrades” keeping the “gravy train” going. Plimer has promoted his ideas on such conspiracy theory hotbeds as Alex Jones’ Prison Planet, where he agreed with the view that the aim was to “kill off most of the planet”……….

Roger Jones, from Climate Scientists Australia, wrote such debates with denialists  are the wrong forum to counter “simple lies with complex truths”. The group turned down a Committee of Economic Development Australia (CEDA) event in December for the same reason…………

they [Climate Denialists] have plenty of practice and no scruples about lying and dodging questions (see Plimer doing both on Lateline a little while back, and Clive Hamilton’s expose of Monckton)……………..

Monckton’s conspiracy theories have wide credence. Monckton himself has been given space in The Australian, and his claims have been repeated verbatim by Janet Albrechtsen and Andrew Bolt, among many others.

The same line has been put forward independently by Liberal Senate Leader Nick Minchin, and it seems pretty clear the conspiracy theory is supported by a majority of the Opposition in Parliament and by an even larger majority of their active supporters. It’s a huge problem for Australian democracy and political debate in general.

  1. It’s a serious problem globally. We have a Global Hot Air problem, especially with Monckton touring Canada, the U.S. and Australia and staying at luxury resorts.

Just think of the carbon footprint!
