Wind farm revival depends Federal Govt’s renewables policy

Wind farm revived after change of rules , Ricks Wallace,  The Australian,  March 02, 2010 CONSTRUCTION of Australia’s largest wind farm has moved a step closer, with AGL announcing it has entered into contractual agreements with its joint-venture partner on the project. The decision by AGL and New Zealand’s Meridian Energy to forge ahead with the $800 million project comes after the Rudd government’s move last week to revamp its failing renewable energy target scheme.
AGL made it clear the Macarthur wind farm, which would have a capacity of 365MW, had been revived because of the Rudd government’s decision to strip subsidised solar units out of the scheme.

“This follow the federal government’s announcement last week of proposed changes to the operation of the renewable energy target scheme,” the company said in a statement.

However, the project, near Hamilton in western Victoria, faces several steps before work begins, including the need for approval by both company’s boards.

“A key consideration of AGL’s board in approving the transaction will be certainty around the final form of the legislation to give effect to the federal government’s announced changes to the RET scheme,” AGL said.
