Australia to fund renewable energy for Observatory

Govt to Fund Renewable Energy to Power Observatory | theangle.org By Rich Bowden 11 June 2010, The Australian Government has announced that it will release $47.3 million to the CSIRO to fund renewable energy solutions for a radio observatory.The funding will go towards supporting “renewable energy infrastructure projects for the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory and the Pawsey High-Performance Computing Centre for SKA Science in Perth,” said the CSIRO news release.

CSIRO Chief Executive Dr Megan Clark said the announcement would kick-start the development of renewable energy technology in Australia and allow the practical use of researched renewable energy technology.“The … project will fund solar and photovoltaic technology to help power the Murchison site and the nation’s largest direct heat geothermal demonstrator to cool the Pawsey Centre supercomputer,” Dr Clark said.“This project will also allow the practical application of research by scientists and students from all over Australia in renewable energy as well as in astronomy, computer science, engineering, geology and environmental management.”
