W.A. way behind in clean energy, despite its renewable resources

Perth comes last for sustainability,  ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation), 15 June 2010, Perth has been ranked the least sustainable city in an assessment of the carbon footprint of Australia’s 20 largest cities….. The Sustainable Energy Association’s WA chairman Ray Wills says the West Australian Government needs to follow the lead of other cities and introduce renewable energy programs.

“We have Australia’s best, in fact the world’s best resources in solar, in wind and there’s grand opportunities for much of Western Australia’s economy to in fact be powered by renewable energy.”

The Sustainable Energy Association’s WA chairman Ray Wills says Perth needs to step up to avoid lagging any further behind the national average.

“Across Australia the average use of renewable energy is around about 8 per cent, in Western Australia it’s about five per cent. Perth comes last for sustainability – ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

  1. I think the ACR survey is silly.
There is too much attempting to quantify the (at least
almost) unquantifiable, and then lumping everything together
    is extremely silly.
Perth is OK. The climate is wonderful (well warmer than Helsinkii in the winter and cooler than Saudi Arabia in the
summer, mustn’t exaggerate too much). We have lots of solar hws – invented some of the styles. Pity we don’t have mountains for hydro power, but WA has lots of wind power. We have expanded up the rail transit a lot in recent decades. Low density housing with gardens is essential to stop urban heat island blight, so, in Perth, low density away from railway stations is correct. And people like their gardens – and yes, they can be drought tolerant ones. The survey penalizes Perth for having too much low density, but, well, the survey is wrong on this.
