International plea to save Arkaroola wilderness from uranium mining

Arkaroola wilderness bid for UN recognition, ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation), 20 July 2010, A bid has been made for Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary to be given United Nations recognition as an international geopark.
The sanctuary operators have been fighting to protect the Arkaroola area of the northern Flinders Ranges in South Australia from mining.
Their 600-square-kilometre property has several geological monuments, including fossils and geothermal springs.If it were selected, Arkaroola sanctuary would become Australia’s second geopark…
Sanctuary owner Marg Sprigg said it was apparent the SA Government needed to ban mining in the sanctuary.
She said the region could take centuries to recover from any mining…..
The SA Parliament is considering whether mining should be allowed at Arkaroola.
Explorer Marathon Resources ran foul of authorities when it dumped uranium exploration waste in the sanctuary about three years ago.
