Greens MP Mark Parnell will continue fight against uranium mining in Arkaroola

Greens MLC Mark Parnell’s proposal to declare the wilderness sanctuary off-limits for miners.

Arkaroola mining debate delayed, The Independent Weekly, SUZIE KEEN24 Jul, 2010 A parliamentary showdown over mining at Arkaroola in the Flinders Ranges will be delayed until September.The Upper House was expected to vote on Tuesday on Greens MLC Mark Parnell’s proposal to declare the wilderness sanctuary off-limits for miners. However, debate on both issues was adjourned will not resume until after parliament’s winter break………….

Mr Parnell is hopeful more Liberal MPs will be swayed to support his Mining Bill amendments before they come to a vote, especially with party members planning a visit to Arkaroola next month.

Marathon Resources confirmed in an Australian Securities Exchange announcement yesterday that it had recommenced exploration activities at Mount Gee, in the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary……….The wilderness sanctuary’s operators announced this week they are making a bid to have it recognised as an international geopark by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Marg Sprigg said the status, which could take up to three years to achieve, would not preclude mining in the sanctuary. However, she hopes international recognition will increase pressure on the State Government to protect Arkaroola.
