Australia offers lukewarm support for action on global warming
The tiny island of Kiribati, which is already being swamped by rising sea levels, will host a meeting of “countries vulnerable to the impact of climate change” in a bid to forge a unified voice on the matter ahead of the Cancun summit.

After talks in Vanuatu on Thursday, regional representatives at the 41st Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) concluded climate change was the biggest threat to the Pacific – a region that includes some of the smallest and most isolated countries in the world.
But the PIF – which reinforced Fiji’s suspension from the organisation – backed away from last year’s focus on limiting temperature change rise, instead pushing for an urgent and “legally binding agreement on emissions reduction”.
Mr Smith – standing in for Prime Minister Julia Gillard who missed the four-day summit due to election commitments – said Australia would “work closely” with Pacific countries in the lead up to a global summit on climate change in Cancun, Mexico later this year….
