China to be in charge of Western Australian uranium mine

China set to control WA uranium miner,  The Canberra Times, BY PHILIP DORLING,  10 Aug, 2010 0 Nuclear armed China has moved to increase its stake in Australia’s uranium industry with a major Chinese state-owned enterprise set to take control of a Western Australian uranium exploration and mining company……

The East China Exploration and Development Bureau has agreed to acquire 108 million Northern Uranium shares at 14.5c each, raising around $15.7 million for the company. The Chinese Government -owned enterprise will then hold a 51 per cent interest in Northern Uranium, which is engaged in exploration at the Gardiner-Tanami uranium project which spans part of the Western Australia-Northern Territory border, and other rare earths projects in the Northern Territory.

Australian Greens nuclear spokesman Scott Ludlam yesterday called for prompt Foreign Investment Review Board assessment of the proposed acquisition and canvassed the desirability of a broader Senate committee inquiry into China’s growing interest in Australian uranium and rare earths resources……

Senator Ludlam warned against any ”xenophobic” reaction to Chinese investment, but suggested that the pattern of Chinese activity merited a broader investigation than that undertaken by the Foreign Investment Review Board.
