Greens refute Labor’s claim to lead on nuclear disarmament

the Greens said the federal government had failed to take decisive action on nuclear disarmament, pointing to its sanction of the exportation of uranium to Russia earlier this year.

Nuclear issues top of Labor’s agenda, Sydney Morning Herald, August 16, 2010 Nuclear disarmament will remain at the top of a re-elected Labor government’s foreign policy agenda, the federal party says………….

However, the Greens said the federal government had failed to take decisive action on nuclear disarmament, pointing to its sanction of the exportation of uranium to Russia earlier this year.

Although a member of the Parliamentary Network for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament (PNND), Prime Minister Julia Gillard has been a disappointment on the issue during the election campaign, Greens Senate candidate Lee Rhiannon told AAP in Sydney on Monday.

“We believe nuclear weapon proliferation should very much be a part of this election campaign,” Ms Rhiannon said.

“Although it may not be immediately in the public’s mind, the threat is real, the threat needs to be dealt with and Australia needs to take a leading role here.”

In April, the federal government approved the exportation of uranium to Russia, a country which has not upheld its obligations to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Ms Rhiannon added.

“Where … both Labor and coalition governments have not been honest with Australian people is that uranium mining is part of the nuclear weapons cycle and the stockholds of uranium can contribute to nuclear weapons.

“It’s highly irresponsible and it should not occur.”…………..

A number of action groups, including People for Nuclear Disarmament NSW (PND), the Sydney Hiroshima Day Committee and Australian Peace Committee sent letters to the major political parties asking them to outline their policies on nuclear disarmament.

The coalition has yet to respond, the groups said.
