Expensive spinning about radioactive waste in Sydney

Ready for a backlash, Sydney Morning Herald, Heath Aston, October 17, 2010 THE Keneally government knows it’s sitting on a dangerously explosive issue in Hunters Hill.Spooked by the coming backlash against moving the harbour’s most toxic blight to less picturesque Mulgoa, it has paid for pre-emptive spin doctoring.

Private firm Elton Consulting has put together a communications strategy that aims, in its words, to ”prevent the escalation of community opposition” to dumping radioactive waste at Kemps Creek.

The 10-page document advises government agencies how to respond to media inquiries. Among talk of ”stakeholders” and ”key messages”, Elton warns that angry residents, spurred on by ”sensational” media reporting, ”particularly [2GB’s] Alan Jones and Ray Hadley”, could mobilise to protest at being a ”dumping ground for Hunters Hill”……..
