Northern Territory govt explains its opposition to Alice Springs uranium mine

Vatskalis defends Alice uranium mine opposition ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation),  Nov 18, 2010 The Northern Territory Resources Minister says a decision to oppose any application to mine for uranium at a site near Alice Springs was not just based on public opinion.
Kon Vatskalis says environmental factors also came into play.

Mr Vatskalis has been at the China Mining Congress this week and says potential investors understand the Government’s position.

The Minister says the Government continues to encourage uranium exploration but the Angela Pamela exploration site is just too close to Alice Springs.

“We’re 20 kilometres from Alice Springs in an arid environment and an environment well known for dust storms,” he said.

“I think it’s enough evidence for us to oppose it but again as I said … we listened to the people, we expressed our opinion based … on the opinion of the people.

“After I explained the reasons they understood very well because China has entered a new era of environmental protection and strict environmental guidelines and so the companies in China understand very well the reasons behind our opposition to establish a mine so close to Alice Springs….
