Greens congratulate Australian government on putting security obligations ahead of uranium companies’ greed

Greens urge Labor to maintain principled stand on selling uranium to India, Scott Ludlam  20th January 2011, The Greens have applauded the decision of the Federal Government to reject the Indian government’s call for an end to Australia’s ban on selling uranium to India.

Australian Greens spokesperson for nuclear affairs Senator Scott Ludlam said there should be “absolutely no contemplation” of Australia selling uranium to countries that have not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.”

The Government has decided not to violate one of the world’s most important treaties,” said Senator Ludlam. “There is talk of reviewing this ban at the next Australian Labor Party conference. The Australian Greens strongly urge the ALP to support the global ban on selling uranium to non-signatories of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.”

Senator Ludlam said this was not specific to India, but applied to any country that remained outside the United Nations system established to phase out nuclear weapons.
“We would greatly prefer the Government to go further as there should be no sale of uranium to nuclear weapons states at all,” he said.
