Talisman Sabre war games disrupted by Peace Convergence

peace cPeace Convergence civil society against militarism in Australia

Peace Pilgrims enter Shoalwater Bay Military Training Facility 23 July, 2013 Two people entered the Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area this morning to disrupt the Talisman Sabre training exercises.

The two are Greg Rolles (31yrs), school teacher from Brisbane; and Graham Dunstan (71yrs), retired grey nomad.

There are currently 28,000 Australian and US troops undertaking joint military training in Australia, with a focus on the Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area.  Last week two US aircraft dropped 4 bombs on the Great Barrier Reef when they were unable to land at their planed location.

Pre-prepared statements from the two peace pilgrims point to the effect of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and their desire to act against the Australian & US military alliance.

Graeme Dunstan stated “It is my intention to trespass onto the Shoalwater Bay Military Area and, by creative nonviolent actions, do the best i can to disrupt the military exercises, demonstrate resistance to the culture of war and preparation for war and create a counter narrative to the propaganda of the military”
Greg Rolles stated “the Australian and US military forces have taken and continue to take many innocent lives and waste money that could be used in, amongst others, our ailing education system.”

The two pilgrim’s full statements follow. Continue reading

Christopher Boyce speaks out on USA interference in Australian politics.

secret-agent-AustFreedom, Flight and The Falcon WikiLeaks Party , 13 July 13 WikiLeaks Party member Gary Lord (@Jaraparilla) interviews Christopher Boyce, whose experiences as a US whistle-blower were documented in the 1985 Sean Penn movie “The Falcon and The Snowman.”…….In 1974, Boyce found himself working in the secretive “Black Vault” communications center of a US aerospace firm, where he had free access to allegedly “misrouted” Central Intelligence Agency cables. And like Bradley Manning and Edward Snowden some 40 years later, he became increasingly angry at his government’s covert actions around the world.

What particularly incensed Boyce, however, were CIA discussions about removing Australia’s Prime Minister from power, along with CIA infiltration of Australian workers unions. At the time, Gough Whitlam was proposing the withdrawal of Australian troops from the Vietnam War and the closure of US military bases including Pine Gap. But Australia was nevertheless a loyal US ally, whom Boyce believed deserved to be treated with more respect. Continue reading

Mournful uranium mining conference in Fremantle

burial.uranium-industryClean energy advocates celebrate while nuclear lobby holds wake in Fremantle 17 Jul 2013   While nuclear power is in retreat around the globe, advocates of clean energy had ‘Better Things To Do’ than protest the Uranium Conference held in Fremantle today – attending the ‘Better Things To Do’ renewable energy industry breakfast. There’s a reason the Australian Uranium Conference shrinks year on year. Nuclear power is in retreat across the globe. Electricity generation from nuclear power plants dropped by a historic seven per cent in 2012, adding to the then record drop of four per cent in 2011,” said Senator Scott Ludlam.

“The world price for uranium has been in free fall since 2007. Uranium accounted for only 0.29 per cent of national export revenue and less than 0.015 per cent of Australian jobs in the decade to 2011.

“WA first proposed uranium mine on a lake bed that floods near Wiluna was analysed by Economists At Large and found only has a business case if Toro can offload clean-up and decommissioning costs to the taxpayer.

“Uranium from Australia was in the four reactors at Fukushima. More than two years since that disaster, there are still 160,000 people evacuated from their homes and their farms as a result of nuclear contamination.

“Western Australia will be a world leader in renewable energy. In the eastern Goldfields and Midwest in particular the emerging solar energy industry could deliver clean energy and sustainable jobs for decades to come. We have exciting developments in wave energy, and a growing wind energy sector. We need to leave uranium in the ground and leave the menace of nuclear power in the past.”

Sellafield’s plutonium in the teeth of all British children

PuPlutonium from Sellafield in all children’s teeth ,  Antony Barnett, public affairs editor The Guardian 30 November 2003 Government admits plant is the source of contamination but says risk is ‘minute’ Radioactive pollution from the Sellafield nuclear plant in Cumbria has led to children’s teeth across Britain being contaminated with plutonium.

flag-UKThe Government has admitted for the first time that Sellafield ‘is a source of plutonium contamination’ across the country. Public Health Minister Melanie Johnson has revealed that a study funded by the Department of Health discovered that the closer a child lived to Sellafield, the higher the levels of plutonium found in their teeth.

Johnson said: ‘Analysis indicated that concentrations of plutonium… decreased with increasing distance from the west Cumbrian coast and its Sellafield nuclear fuel reprocessing plant – suggesting this plant is a source of plutonium contamination in the wider population.’ Johnson claimed the levels of plutonium are so minute that there is no health risk to the public. But this is disputed by scientists, MPs and environmental campaigners who have called for an immediate inquiry into how one of the world’s most dangerous materials has been allowed to continue to contaminate children’s teeth. There have long been claims of clusters of childhood leukaemia around Sellafield.

In the late 1990s researchers collected more than 3,000 molars extracted from young teenagers across the country during dental treatment and analysed them. To their surprise they found traces of plutonium in all the teeth including those from children in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Alarmingly, they discovered that those living closer to Sellafield had more than twice the amount of those living 140 miles away.

Plutonium is a man-made radioactive material and the only source of it in Britain is from Sellafield. The plant, which reprocesses nuclear fuel from reactors, still discharges plutonium into the Irish Sea. Continue reading

China’s anti nuclear movement may go national – this is the government’s fear

The government in Beijing would be happy if anti-nuclear protests were to stay at the level of bickering between counties or even the occasional outburst of nimbyism, as in Jiangmen. But there is a risk that the success of Jiangmen residents in securing a change of heart could encourage others. “We can expect similar protests wherever a nuclear project is planned,” says Eva Sternfeld of Berlin’s Technical University, who has studied such activism.

So declared banners raised by some of the flag-Chinahundreds of protesters who took to the streets of Jiangmen city  in the southern province of Guangdong on July 12th. In a remarkable concession, the local government announced that it would heed their demands and abandon plans to build a uranium-processing facility. For officials in Beijing, keen to develop nuclear power and keep activism in check, the demonstration was an unsettling sign of potential trouble. Continue reading
