Melbourne University’s plan for 100% renewable energy for Australia in just 10 years

100% renewable energy in Australia in only 10 years – no carbon tax

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qImNRuV4G0Q&feature=colike

Melbourne University has released a 194 page blueprint for how to convert all Australia’s existing power generation to 100% renewable in just 10 years. The report is scientifically based, well researched and takes into account all aspects of such a plan including technology, jobs, upgrades, placement, transitionary effects and it is completely costed.
This country needs a plan that is bold. This country needs a plan that doesn’t involve a massive increase in the cost of living that will do NOTHING to reduce emissions but will ensure coal miners and their union heavies are kept in employment within their polluting industry.
I urge everyone to visit the link I have at the end of the video and below and download the plan. Set yourself a couple of hours to go through it. If you agree with it, email your local member and raise it with them.
It is time this country did something bold, something that will create 10’s of 1000’s of jobs and make the Snowy River Scheme look like a Sunday picnic. This could be our opportunity to show the world what we are capable of and set ourselves up as the global leaders in renewable energy technology.
Please go to the link.

AUDIO: Queensland is especially vulnerable to global warming

Global warming threatens Qld agriculture sector: report   http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-09-25/global-warming-threatens-qld-economy-report/4278764   ABC News  By Sharnie Kim 26 Sept 12, The Federal Government’s Climate Change Commission is warning in a new report of a looming crisis in Queensland’s agricultural sector.
AUDIO: Reports says Qld’s economy is vulnerable to global warming effects. (AM)
The Climate Change Commission says Queensland’s economy is particularly vulnerable to the effects of global warming.

It says rising temperatures and changing weather patterns will lead to falls in beef, sugar and cereal production.

Commissioner Lesley Hughes says it is critical to quickly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“The challenge that we have in front of us is how quickly we can act to avoid the worst of those changes,” she said.

But she says some change is inevitable and farmers must adapt.

“There will be some sorts of agricultural practices that simply won’t be able to occur where they occur now,” she said.

The Commission’s report also warns of threats to the state’s coastal developments, biodiversity and tourism sector.

Ms Hughes says urgent action is needed to reduce carbon emissions.

“Nowhere’s doing enough so I wouldn’t single out Queensland in any way – Queensland is particularly vulnerable,” she said.

“Its economy, its natural environment, its agricultural industries and its coastal infrastructure is extremely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, so Queenslanders have to do their bit.”

If You Love This Planet – a radio programme that is making a difference

Since 2010, website traffic has increased dramatically from 40,000 site visits a month to an average of 275,000 monthly site visits today.

On March 11 and 12, 2013, we will convene a landmark symposium, The Medical and Ecological Consequences of Fukushima, at the New York Academy of Medicine.  This conference will bring together doctors, scientists, government officials and journalists who will present uncensored documentation about the known and projected effects of the Fukushima meltdowns as reported in Japan and throughout the Northern Hemisphere.

Letter from Dr Helen Caldicott September 21, 2012 Dear friends and supporters of If You Love This PlanetI want to share with you the encouraging response to If You Love This Planet, which has become a powerful media presence in its first four years.  As we produce our fifth year of programming, I am very enthusiastic about the difference the radio show is making.

Since July 2008, If You Love This Planet has delivered vitally important educational programming whose in-depth content is found nowhere else on the airwaves or the Internet.  My weekly radio series is now heard on over 75 stations in the U.S., Canada and Australia, offering a full, uninterrupted hour of dialogue with one expert on the world’s major public health dangers.  Many other listeners hear the show on ifyoulovethisplanet.org.

If You Love This Planet is the only international radio series that regular addresses the hazards of nuclear weapons and nuclear power, two urgent topics which are often censored or distorted in major media.  The radio show is a key tool for The Helen Caldicott Foundation to achieve its goal of ridding the world of nuclear weapons and nuclear power.  My guests and I regularly connect the dots between nuclear energy and nuclear arms, exposing the horrific truth about these lethal technologies and underlining how money spent on bombs and deadly power plants squanders precious dollars that should – must – be used to reduce global warming in carbon-free and nuclear-free ways.

If You Love This Planet is also the only radio program which covers global warming from a physician’s perspective, as human-induced climate change joins nuclear weapons and nuclear power as one of the top three threats to human existence.  We also cover toxic pollution, deforestation, species extinction, uranium mining, and endangered oceans, plus subjects like health care in the U.S. and how large corporations destroy the environment.  And we regularly teach listeners about truly green, renewable energy and how to respect nature and live healthier lives.

My lineup of guests is outstanding.  Just in the last year, I have interviewed Arnold Gundersen on the Fukushima meltdowns, Mary Olson on women’s vulnerability to atomic radiation, Amory Lovins on the future of renewable power, Seymour Hersh on the media’s role in U.S. war-making, Dr. Arjun Makhijani on solar power, Ronnie Cummins on safeguarding healthy food against genetic engineering, Michel Chossudovsky on targeting Iran for another oil war, Reese Halter on endangered honeybees and global warming, Anne Steinemann on toxic fragrances, Alan Robock on nuclear winter, Robert Moore on algae biofuels, Martin Sheen on antinuclear activism, Susan Greenfield on technology and young people’s brains, and Lexi Shultz on Republican efforts to block global warming legislation. Interactive Australian Map of Nuclear Sites launched today

Friends of the Earth is today launching australianmap.net, a new online educational resource which brings together information, photos and videos about more than 50 of Australia’s nuclear sites including uranium mines and processing plants, the Lucas Heights research reactor, proposed reactor and dump sites, and British nuclear weapons test sites.

An overview shines a spotlight on recurring problems in Australia’s nuclear history such as children being exposed to radiation, unresolved radioactive contamination issues, and the important role of nuclear whistleblowers. An article about the project, ‘Recovering Australia’s Nuclear History’, is posted at New Matilda.

Of course the map pictured below is NOT interactive, but the one at australianmap.net  IS

We would be grateful if your organisation could provide a web-link to australianmap.net.

We invite you to put australianmap on your own website − for more information visit australianmap.net/embed

An A2 poster is also being produced and distributed at cost price − please contact us if you want to order some.

View australianmap.net online or download a PDF file which contains all entries and the overview. Another feature of the website is the interactive ‘Chernobyl in Australia’ map which allows people to choose potential reactor sites and different wind directions to see what would happen if something went terribly wrong.

australianmap material has been written and researched by Jim Green and Nectaria Calan with IT support from Glenn Todd.

Calls for Australia’s nuclear wastes to go to Maralinga – Aboriginal political leader

AUDIO    http://www.abc.net.au/rural/nt/content/201208/s3574500.htm Indigenous party wants radioactive dump built on nuked land ABC Rural News, By Steven Schubert, 23 August  2012 The founder of the First Nations Political Party is calling for the nuclear waste dumped proposed fo Muckaty Station north of Tennant Creek to be built at Maralinga in South Australia instead.

That’s the site where the British Government tested several nuclear bombs during the 50s.

Maurie Japarta Ryan is running for the party in the seat of Stuart at the election, and says he believes Maralinga would be a better site for the dump.

“Why wreck a pristine place where there’s water at Muckaty, why not use scientific evidence, which they all talk about, and move it to a place where they’ve already nuked Australian people at Maralinga in South Australia?

“What I’m saying is scientifically nothing lives there, nobody goes there.”…. http://www.abc.net.au/rural/nt/content/201208/s3574500.htm

Energy Matters Video News – Episode 71 – August 8,

some of India’s “energy poor” were winners during the events. Many households in affected rural areas had the lights stay on thanks to their small off grid solar power systems that incorporate deep cycle battery storage.

With the possibility of another such event occurring, decentralized energy generation using renewable energy sources will likely gain even more attention in India.

Energy Matters Video News – Episode 71 – August 8, 2012 http://www.energymatters.com.au/index.php?main_page=news_article&article_id=3330 by Energy Matters Presented by Energy Matters team member Virginia, we take a look at some of the stories from Australia and around the world recently added to ourrenewable energy news section.

This week, Virginia reports on solar to the rescue during India’s massive blackout, solar to be cheaper than brown coal by 2030, the Australian Solar Institute providing funding for research into solar solutions for rural areas and the Saphonian – a wind turbine without blades.  In what has been described as the world’s largest blackout event, solar panels again proved their worth.
