AUDIO: climate change causes dangerous jellyfish to move South, threatening Australia’s tourism industry

Hear-This-wayAUDIO Researchers say Irukandji jellyfish migrating further south along Qld coast http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-10-29/irukandji-jellyfish-migrating-further-south-along-qld-coast/5051580   AM   By Nance Haxton and staff  29 Oct 2013,

Marine researchers say climate change could be altering the migration patterns of the dangerous Irukandji jellyfish along Queensland’s east coast.

The Irukandji is one of the deadliest marine animals, so venomous it inflicts excruciating pain that sometimes leads to death.

It has been on a relentless march southwards down the Queensland coast.

If the Irukandji becomes established off Queensland’s south-east coast, it would be devastating for the region’s tourism industry……

VIDEO and AUDIO Climate Council links NSW bushfires to climate change

climate-Aust “Of course, the link then to climate change is we now have a hotter climate in general than we had 50 years ago.

“There is more heat in the atmosphere because of the additional greenhouse gases that humans have put into the atmosphere. So that sort of link is really straightforward to make.

VIDEO and AUDIO Climate Council links NSW bushfires to climate change ABC Radio   VIDEO: Professor Will Steffen speaks to the media (ABC News)        AUDIO: Listen to the full story here (The World Today)   The World Today   By Simon Lauder and staff 25 Oct 2013,   As the Federal Government continues to reject claims that recent bushfires are linked with Hear-This-wayclimate change, a report by scientists has stirred the debate further by saying the two are indeed linked.

The Climate Council, which was called the Climate Commission before it was recently de-funded by the Coalition Government, says climate change is increasing the probability of extreme fire weather days and is lengthening the fire season.

When questioned about it this morning, Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt said there was “no debate” about the science and he said it see-this.waywas unfortunate that some people have used the New South Wales bushfire situation to make a political point.

Climate scientists say facts must be put on the table

The group of climate scientists, including Professor Will Steffen from the Australian National University, says with a lot of misinformation about, the facts need to be put on the table.

Professor Steffen was part of the Climate Commission, which was set up by the former Labor government to provide scientific information about climate change.

It was dismantled by the Coalition, but its members sought public donations to continue their work and now call themselves the Climate Council.

Today, the council is bringing forward some of the interim findings from a new bushfires and climate change report. Continue reading

Can traditional Indigenous methods of fire management help prevent catastrophic bushfires?

That’s an argument being raised again, as the bushfire season gets underway.

But there those cautioning that while traditional methods may be useful in some areas, they can’t be applied across Australia.

Al Gore on the link between climate change and bushfires

Al Gore weighs into debate over links between bushfires and climate change http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-10-23/al-gore-weighs-into-debate-over-bushfire-climate-change/5041776   Former US vice-president and environmentalist Al Gore says there is a proven link between climate change and bushfires.

This week, a United Nations official said the devastating fires in New South Wales proved the world is “already paying the price of carbon”.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott dismissed the comment on Wednesday, accusing the official of “talking through her hat”.

He argued that “fire is a part of the Australian experience” and not linked to climate change. …

Mr Gore, a Nobel laureate for his work to fight climate change, has told the ABC’s 7.30 that climate change will bring about more extreme weather.

“Bushfires can occur naturally, and do, but the science shows clearly that when the temperature goes up, and when the vegetation and soils dry out, then wildfires become more pervasive and more dangerous.

“That’s not me saying it, that’s what the scientific community says.” Continue reading

Scientists say climate change link to bushfires demands action ABC News Mon 21 Oct 2013,With claims that current climate policies would lead to more bushfires, Deputy Greens Leader Adam Bandt was accused of politicising the a natural disaster, but scientists say the link between global warming and fires is established and demands action.

Tracy Bowden TRACY BOWDEN, REPORTER: Fire storms in October. Scorchingly hot, dry, windy days and warnings of more to come. Is this climate change in action?

JOHN CONNOR, CEO, THE CLIMATE INSTITUTE: Carbon pollution is a heat-trapping greenhouse gas that is like putting the weather on steroids. It drives the greater extremes. It’s not just warmer weather, it’s wilder weather.

ADAM BANDT, GREENS DEPUTY LEADER: It’s October and we’re having a tragic bushfire, and meanwhile, Tony Abbott and his ministers have been out every day this week saying that they’re going to take Australia backwards when it comes to combatting global warming……

TRACY BOWDEN: Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt has been reluctant to discuss any link between climate change and the current bushfires.

GREG HUNT, ENVIRONMENT MINISTER: There are 2,000-odd firefighters in the field as we speak. There have been over 200 homes lost and of course a terrible tragedy on the Central Coast. No-one, no-one should be politicising these bushfires and I would say that respectfully to the gentleman in question.

DON HENRY, AUSTRALIAN CONSERVATION FOUNDATION: Well I actually don’t think it should be political that we have to get on with the job of cutting our pollution that’s driving climate extremes.

TRACY BOWDEN: The recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned of exactly the kind of conditions which struck last week: more extreme heat in Australia and more bushfires.

ANDY PITMAN, CENTRE FOR EXCELLENCE FOR CLIMATE SYSTEM SCIENCE: We have had fires historically this early before, but I think the difference this time is that we’ve just gone through a winter that is unprecedentedly warm.

TRACY BOWDEN: Climate scientist Andy Pitman says the science is becoming clearer.

ANDY PITMAN: It’s not about the day or the day before the bushfire. It’s about the three or four months of winter that were enormously warm in part due to global warming leading to an environment particularly conducive to fire.

TRACY BOWDEN: Does that mean this is a sign of things to come?

ANDY PITMAN: If we continue to emit nine or 9.5 billion tonnes of CO2 as a species into the atmosphere each year, it is inevitable that temperature extremes will continue to rise and mean temperatures will continue to rise.

DON HENRY: We should be asking our Parliament and all parliamentarians to have strong laws in place to cut pollution.

TRACY BOWDEN: Despite the science, there have been cutbacks at national and state levels in resources to research and prepare for the impact of climate change……http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-10-21/scientists-say-climate-change-link-to-bushfires/5036554

AUDIO: Australian government turning its back on climate change, says Kiribati president

Hear-This-wayAUDIO: President Anote Tong speaks to Pacific Beat (ABC News)

Kiribati president concerned with rolling back of Australian climate change focus http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-10-03/an-kiribati-president-concerned-with-rolling-back-of-australian/4995276  3 Oct 2013,   Kiribati President Anote Tong says he is concerned by the new Australian government’s apparent backing away from the issue of climate change.
The Tony Abbott-led Coalition has scrapped the Climate Commission, begun work repealing the carbon tax, and has given indications it is prepared to listen to those who question climate change science.

President Tong told Radio Australia’s Pacific Beatthe Australian government’s approach to climate change appears to be a reversal of the previous administration’s position.”We are watching to see what the declared policy of the new Australian administration is, how it translates down, because there’s no question about it,” he said.

“Australia is not immediately under threat with climate change, but we the low-lying countries are and so we have no choice but to take seriously the scientific projections.”

Pacific leaders, including President Tong, used last week’s United Nations General Assembly to call on the developed world to give climate change the prominence they feel it deserves.

Film ‘The Way The Wind Blows’ counters the myths about Waubra wind farm

FilmThe truth about Waubra… Locals set record straight on wind farm http://yes2renewables.org/2013/09/20/the-truth-about-waubra/#comment-39331 Those who have followed the rollout of wind energy in Australia would have heard of the quaint Victorian town of Waubra–the location of one of Australia’s largest wind farms. Producing enough clean electricity to for 143,000 households, more than enough to power Ballarat, Waubra’s 128 wind turbines offset a massive 635,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year which would have been generated by burning coal in the LaTrobe Valley.

Wind-farm-Waubra-Victoria

While the town should be known for its leadership role addressing climate change and repowering Australia with renewable energy, its name has been tarnished by anti-wind farm lobbyists.

astroturf-windIn 2010, the Waubra Foundation was formed  by Peter Mitchell–a fossil fuel investor and wind farm opponent–and has unleashed a scare campaign about the alleged health risk of wind energy ever since. The organisation coopted the town’s name without consent of it residents. Unfortunately for locals, the town is linked to a so-called wind farm noise disease rather than its strong community and quality produce.

This all could be about the change.

Over a year in the making, independent filmmaker Neil Barrett has interviewed wind farmers, neighbours and locals to get to the bottom of the negative claims surrounding the project. Barratt has produced a short film entitles The Way The Wind Blows which counters the myths and gives locals a voice for the first time. The short film is a must view.

Abbott government’s prelude to Australia’s climate calamity

Coalition commences coordinated climate change calamity Well befitting a man who thinks climate change science is crap, new Prime Minister Tony Abbott is shutting down every climate change commission in the country, reports Torin Peel. Independent Australia 20 Sept 13  TONY ABBOTT HAS BECOME a man who has become notorious on the issue of climate change, the science of which he once dismissed as ‘absolute crap’…

Tim Flannery defends Climate Commission

…..Despite Abbott believing that the evidence pointing toward climate change is ‘absolute crap’, he has still made a commitment to enforce his new direct action policy, even while striving to abolish every climate board in the country. Abbott has also said that the world has stopped warming, which would render his plan as useless if he was to stick to his views. http://www.independentaustralia.net/2013/politics/coalition-commences-coordinated-climate-change-calamity/

AUDIO: Queensland ‘s surf coast worried about delays to renewable energy

Hear-This-wayNewman-destroys-renewablesKirra Groyne, renewable energy  Radio 612 ABC Brisbane  16 August 2013 ,  by Rebecca Armstrong

Only two weeks ago the surfing community was celebrating the start of work to restore Kirra Groyne which aims to replace 30 metres of rock wall to return the iconic surf spot to it’s former glory.

Construction has now been delayed because Gold Coast City Council failed to get the necessary approvals from the State Government before it commenced the $800,000 project.

Steve Austin spoke to Queensland’s Environment Minister Andrew Powell about this issue. He also asked him about a World Wildlife Fund report that found that energy prices would go up if the carbon price was scrapped.  http://blogs.abc.net.au/queensland/2013/08/kirra-groyne-renewable-energy.html
