Anti-nuclear movement making waves in Australia

The sad reality is that whoever forms government in Australia on Monday will support expanded uranium mining and radioactive waste dumping at Muckaty.

Whilst we have strong political supporters it is increasingly clear that it is the community and community organisations and resistance that best challenges the atomic agenda

those of us working for a nuclear free future have got some results and made some waves.– Dave Sweeney, 20 August 2010,

Muckaty and the push for responsible radioactive waste management is a growing national issue and campaign thanks to the efforts of the Traditional Owners and their supporters who had protests and presences around the country, billboards and media in Melbourne, public meetings in Sydney and surrounds and through the work of Friends of the Earth’s nuclear freeways project.

We have realised multi-party support to protect Koongarra in Kakadu Park from the threat of uranium mining forever by including the region in Kakadu National Park. This is in response to a long running push and a very tenacious resistance coupled with a very generous offer from Koongarra’s senior Traditional Owner Jeffrey Lee. This is a major win for the environment, the aspirations of the regions Traditional Owners and all of us.

And we have kept a whole lot of other valuable campaigning happening during this period: an extensive uranium awareness road show through the Kimberley, ICAN’s strong advocacy for an end to nuclear weapons,…..

The sad reality is that whoever forms government in Australia on Monday will support expanded uranium mining and radioactive waste dumping at Muckaty.

Whilst we have strong political supporters it is increasingly clear that it is the community and community organisations and resistance that best challenges the atomic agenda – it is what we have done for a long time – it is what is needed to be done – and it is what we do best.
