Labor MPs speak out against nuclear power for Australia
“We’ve got untapped supplies of wind and solar energy so I think the economics of developing those sorts of energy sources are going to far outweigh the benefits and the costs of developing a nuclear industry.”…….”I don’t think that the end result, which is the whole expense and difficulties of decommissioning and dealing with the waste, have been addressed.”
llawarra MPs oppose nuclear power proposal – ABC Illawarra NSW – Australian Broadcasting Corporation December 2, 2010 Illawarra Labor MPs have voiced their opposition to nuclear power amid talks of a debate on the agenda for next year’s national conference.
……… the Member for Throsby Stephen Jones says the economic case to introduce nuclear power as an energy source in Australia does not add up.
Mr Jones says he is opposed to nuclear power but is happy and willing to have the discussion.
But he says it is not economically viable for the country because of ample renewable energy and fossil fuel sources.
“I just don’t think on the economics nuclear power is going to stack up at any time in the next 20 to 30 years,” he said.
“We don’t even have to look at the environmental sides of things, I just think on the economics, nuclear power is not a viable option.
“We’ve got untapped supplies of wind and solar energy so I think the economics of developing those sorts of energy sources are going to far outweigh the benefits and the costs of developing a nuclear industry.”
The Member for Cunningham Sharon Bird says the Labor Party is mature enough to have the debate.
But Ms Bird says she believes the long term costs and environmental impacts are not worth nuclear power being considered.
“While the operation of them is no emissions and in a short term view might address some of the problems around global warming, I don’t think that the end result, which is the whole expense and difficulties of decommissioning and dealing with the waste, have been addressed.”
