Australia: wind and solar to provide revenue and jobs in 2011
Reaching the target is expected to generate investments of approximately 16.8 billion dollars and create over 25,000 jobs in the renewable energy sector….2011 appears to be shaping up as the year of wind energy, with five large-scale wind power projects likely to generate market revenues of well over 2 billion dollars, a marked increase from the 380 million dollars in 2010.
Strong 2011 Forecast For Australia’s Wind And Solar Energy Sector by Energy Matters, 8 Feb 2011, Despite instability in regard to various solar incentives in Australia, including a reduction in solar panel rebates in the months ahead, market research and consulting firm Frost & Sullivan predicts continued high growth in wind and solar energy projects across the nation. WA is ideal for small scale Concentrated Solar Power, with energy storage
small scale parabolic dish forms of CSP can provide a local, renewable alternative to non-renewable energy sources transmitted from outside the area…..In a CSP based facility, heat can also be stored for electricity generation after dark and on days when the sun doesn’t shine by using a heat storage system such as a molten salt battery.
Western Australia’s Concentrated Solar Power Potential Renewable Energy News :by Energy Matters. 18 Jan 2011, Researchers from the University of Western Australia say Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technologies have excellent potential to generate clean, renewable electricity for communities and mining operations throughout the state’s vast Wheatbelt. Australia’s Parliament House going solar
Solar power plan for Parliament House, Canberra Times, BY DANIELLE CRONIN, 17 Jan, 2011 Solar panels will be installed on Parliament House’s roof as part of an effort to find long-term solutions to the building’s energy needs, according to a senior official.Parliament’s cooling and heating systems were 22 years old and would need to be replaced in a few years, Department of Parliamentary Services secretary Alan Thompson said.At the same time, the department was looking at alternative energy sources such as wind and solar…..Solar power plan for Parliament House – Local News – News – General – The Canberra Times
World’s fastest solar-powered car designed by Australian students
Australian students design ‘world’s fastest solar car’ – The Economic Times, 12 Jan, 2011, MELBOURNE: Australian students claim to have designed the world’s fastest solar car which has smashed a Guinness World Record by travelling at a speed of 88 kmph.The car, designed by the University of New South Wales students, smashed the world solar car speed record at the HMAS Albatross navy base airstrip in Nowra. The speed was faster than the previous record of 79 kmph…..Australian students design ‘world’s fastest solar car’ – The Economic Times
Solar power the answer for regional Western Australia
there is an opportunity to consider small-scale electricity generation from renewable sources for local consumption given that the ability to supply more electricity to the region is subject to capacity constraints and the high cost of upgrades to current infrastructure………..
Solar gives good electricity, Science Alert, 14 January 2011 A study by researchers from The University of Western Australia has confirmed the potential for Concentrated Solar Power to generate electricity for communities and mining interests across the Wheatbelt. Continue reading
New South Wales solar farm development
100MW Solar Farm For New South Wales : Renewable Energy News , 10 Jan 2011, The New South Wales government has given the nod to Infigen Suntech to develop the state’s first commercial solar farm. The $300 million solar power station will be constructed on 200 hectares at East Nyngan Road and Boundary Street East, Nyngan and will consist of 300,000 solar panels. The Nyngan PV Solar Farm will generate enough renewable energy to provide clean electricity for up to 20,000 homes and will avoid the generation of 150,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year – the equivalent of removing approximately 30,000 cars from Australian roads annually………….100MW Solar Farm For New South Wales : Renewable Energy News :
Queensland Premier redirects money to solar power
Anna Bligh ….saying it would help develop two new solar plants that power over 50,000 homes.
Anna Bligh culls coal to fund solar Courier Mail Patrick Lion (Qld) December 25, 2010 The Sunday Mail has learnt the Premier recently redirected one-third of the clean coal allocation in the Queensland Future Growth Fund towards the development of two new commercial-scale solar power projects. Heart of Australia can develop solar energy
the price of these solar panels is coming within cooee of the cost of gas-fired production,…Alice Springs is very environmentally conscious. If we want to test anything in the environmental area this is where we will test it out.”
Sun shines on nation’s largest solar station, NT News | DAVID WOOD | December 16th, 2010 A NEW solar power station believed to be the biggest in Australia will be built at Alice Springs. The Federal Government will chip in half of the funding for the $6.6 million power station, to be built by Alice Solar City and SunPower Corporation. Continue reading
Dubbo can lead the way for NSW rural solar power
“Dubbo is an excellent location for a number of reasons,” he said.
“It has a very supportive council and local community for renewable electricity, very good sunlight intensity, and our business model is very much building solar power stations in regional australia, particularly regional NSW.”
Dubbo to become renewable energy hub ABC Western Plains NSW – Australian Broadcasting Corporation, December 15, 2010 A solar power station, believed to be the first of its kind in Australia, is being planned for Dubbo in western New South Wales. Continue reading
Research report shows Queensland’s world-class ability for solar power
The key findings of the Parsons Brinckerhoff report include:
• the quality of Queensland’s solar resource is comparable to the world’s best solar resources;
• deploying large-scale solar projects in Queensland is technically and environmentally feasible;
Study provides a roadmap for solar power in Queensland, My Sunchine Coast, 9 Nov 10, A new study indicates Queensland has all the necessary elements to become an international leader in commercial-scale solar power, including solar resources that are comparable to the best found anywhere in the world. Australians have been deceived about global Climate Change action
There’s a lot happening out there in the world that Australians have been deceived about by the “the world isn’t acting, Australia shouldn’t lead” line. It’s a blatant lie and one that should be completely shattered by the time the Cancun negotiations are over, so we can get on with setting an effective carbon price as the Government’s number one priority in 2011.
C’mon Aussie c’mon…. seriously, c’mon!!!! Crikey November 30, 2010 – 9:55 pm, by Anna Rose.…………….After the UN talks in Copenhagen a year ago, we saw a concerted effort from Tony Abbott and his climate denier cronies to create an attitude in the community that the rest of the world wasn’t acting on climate change. This couldn’t be further from the truth Continue reading
Australia’s nuclear lobby steps up the spin, in fear of renewables’ success
The nuclear lobby fears the success of renewable energy. This is a pressing reason for stepping up nuclear spin in Australia today.
The cheerleader of pro-nuclear, anti-renewables spin is THE AUSTRALIAN newspaper. Their “environment editor” Graham Lloyd, is more of an Anti Environment editor. Today’s edition (27 Nov) has no less than three articles promoting nuclear power, and rubbishing wind energy.
We have foot-soldiers of nuclear spin – Jennifer Marohasy, Janet Albrechtsen, Martin Nicholson, Tom Biegler and Barry Brook getting coverage in the mainstream media. And even Australian Radiation Protection Society getting lectures on how we need nuclear powered submarines, and the” ideal of having a national nuclear industry”
Minister for Resources, Martin Ferguson launched a technical paper that portrays nuclear power as an economic option for Australia
Internationally, papers are appearing on the theme of ionising radiation being “good for you”.
The nuclear lobby has very little time, (with most nuclear reactors soon reaching their close-down date) to market its product against its popular and fast-developing competitors – renewable energy and energy efficiency. – Christina Macpherson
