Earthquake in Western Australian mining area

Biggest quake in 50 years hits Australia’s goldfields (open pit) Virginia Against Uranium Mining: Biggest quake Perth, Australia (AFP) April 20, 2010 The biggest earthquake in 50 years rattled Western Australia’s Goldfields region on Tuesday, damaging buildings but not causing any injuries, officials said.The 5.2-magnitude quake, at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometres (six miles), struck just outside the Kalgoorlie-Boulder mining towns at about 8:17 am (0017 GMT), geologists said……..A spokesman for the geoscientific agency said the remote mining centre, about 600 kilometres (370 miles) east of Perth, had not seen an earthquake bigger than 4.2 in the previous half-century.”This is quite a large earthquake for Australia and a shallow, potentially damaging, earthquake,” he said. “It’s the largest event in this area in the last 50 years.” Officials at nearby mines were not immediately available for comment.

Western Australian Labor Party remains opposed to uranium mining

Labor remains opposed to uranium mining , ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) 29 March 2010, The Western Australian State Opposition insists it is united in its opposition to uranium mining.Labor’s spokeswoman for the environment Sally Talbot took part in an anti-uranium protest in Kalgoorlie over the weekend……..

Dr Talbot says the party is opposed to the emerging industry.

“Everybody’s entitled to their own opinions but the Labor Party has a policy that is absolutely crystal clear – we’re opposed to uranium mining.”

“In government we will not support uranium mining. If we had won the last election we would not be contemplating opening up uranium mines in Western Australia.”

Children accessing old uranium site ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)Mar 3, 2010 BHP Billiton says it will step up security at an old uranium testing site in Kalgoorlie after concerns children are accessing the area.Labor’s candidate for the federal seat of O’Connor, Ian Bishop, says damage to a security gate has allowed children to enter the site at Hannan’s north on dirt bikes. More than 5,000 tonnes of tailings from the Yeelirrie uranium deposit, near Wiluna, were buried in the area after BHP stopped testing ore-processing there in the 1980s.
