Strange deals – Aboriginals and Olympic Dam Uranium Mine Expansion

The Kokatha-Mula appear to have become the “Land Council” for the traditional Kokatha people of the Western Desert, since the traditional Kokatha people walked out on Native Title and BHP Billiton several years ago!

Kokatha ”Mula”, sounds catchy and similar but on researching the internet found no historic reference to this name.

Hypocrisy of Rudd government on selling uranium to Russia

Never mind that they got elected on promises to repeal Howard’s plans to dump nuclear waste on Northern Territory aboriginal land.

Never mind that the Rudd government’s own Senate inquiry recommended that selling uranium to Russia was unsafe, could increase nuclear weapons proliferation.

But – the sheer hypocrisy of Kevin Rudd, posing as the world’s great disarmament leader (with another old pro-nuker, Gareth Evans), and then deciding to send nuclear fuel to Russia!

Right at the time when the world tries to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, and while Russia is now supplying Iran’s nuclear power plant!

Rann government cannot be trusted on environmental protection

Murray-Darling: deal or no deal? – Crikey, 17 March 2010, “……..Twice Rann was elected with a policy to stop new uranium mines. Three times SA got brand new or bigger uranium mines. There are environmental issues of real substance in this campaign, including a proposed uranium mine in the Arkaroola Wilderness north of Adelaide in the majestic Flinders Ranges.

In a submission to government this week, state museum scientists said their cross-discipline analysis was in no doubt: uranium mining there will cause species extinction. The Rann Government says it can be trusted to make the right decision on the Arkaroola Wilderness uranium mine after the election on March 20. It might allow it, it might not, is its present policy….”

Aboriginals and Uranium Mining – Quiet Deals Going On?

Just who are the Kokatha Mula Land Nations Council Inc and the Kokatha Olympic Dam Agreement Association Inc?

No, they are not the Kokatha people, but a newer and vaguer mob.

Anyway, they’re having their “Annual general Meeting” on March 27th

Do I smell a BHP Billiton front rat?

S.A. election: a word of warning about Aboriginal candidates

Aboriginal  candidates are standing in the forthcoming South Australian election. Sounds good, BUT – a word of warning.

WHAT ARE THESE CANDIDATES’ AGENDA ON THE URANIUM INDUSTRY?

Sorry – but,  I recall Maggie Thatcher’s dubious contribution to women’s issues. Being an aboriginal candidate is no guarantee of being properly  informed on the longterm impact on aborigines of uranium mining. And, there is scope for pressure and incentives from that industry, and from that pro-nuclear State government.

The candidates are Lynette Crocker and Dylan Coleman Mastrosavas, ANTaR SA is helping Lynette and Dylan to stand as ‘Independent SA Change’

When a respected institution known for its measured and considered responses to issues of public importance, such as the Museum, asks the Government to pay attention, it would be foolish to do otherwise.

Move to set up Australia’s nuclear waste import industry

Good intentions…taking back nuclear waste,  international environmental law, “….former Labor Foreign Minister Gareth Evans, now Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s point man on nuclear non-proliferation, echoed last month’s assertion by former Australian Labor Party Prime Minister Bob Hawke that the country had to view the establishment of a nuclear waste industry as a moral, financial and environmental response to climate change by expanding its role in the atomic energy fuel trade and taking back all waste generated in foreign nuclear power plants derived from the uranium it sells on the global market.

Evans’ proposal is at odds with the current policies of the Rudd government, which maintains that it will not import nuclear fuel waste,
