Serious doubts on ANSTO and Silex Systems uranium enrichment technology

The technology in question was licensed from Silex Systems, an Australian company that’s been quietly conducting enrichment research at a small facility near Sydney for the last quarter century. But many experts are skeptical….a huge and extremely risky bet.”…..they also present a major headache for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and other nuclear watchdog groups attempting to spot clandestine enrichment plants,

Review: hypocrisy on uranium and nuclear industry

Australia: what a load of hypocrisy is going on. about the Resources Tax!  BHP saying that Olympic Dam uranium mine’s expansion is threatened.  Of course it is!  – By the collapse of the uranium market ! ANSTO forced to admit its safety failures. And, we wait to see if Peter Garrett will be able to promote AREVA’s uranium mining in Koongarra, while he still poses as Minister for Environment

International: hypocrisy as the closing Nuclear Non Proliferation conference promotes the nuclear industry, as pro-nukes suggest nuke bombing the oil spill, as the industry touts new, little, thorium reactors.  All in a desperate bid to keep the “peaceful” nuclear industry afloat, as nuclear reactors age and close down, while new ones just aren’t getting built, except in secretive totalitarian states, such as China

ANSTO’s SILEX nuclear laser invention is a weapons proliferation risk

“If this [SILEX new laser technology] proliferates, a country could develop material for a nuclear weapon without anyone being able to detect their activity.”

Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Says SILEX Needs a Careful Look Newswise 4/13/2010— As global leaders discuss ridding the world of nuclear weapons, the chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory (NRC) Commission has acknowledged that a new laser technology— which could lead to even more global proliferation – deserves a closer examination.Commonly known as SILEX (Separation of Isotopes by Laser Excitation), the laser technology carries significant proliferation risks because of its small size and low energy use. Review: nuclear waste, Security Summit, Non Proliferation

Review. Australia. Government and media doing a fine job keeping quiet about the Senate Inquiry into Radioactive Waste Management Bill, while opposition mounts locally to the Northern territory nuke waste dump plan. South Australia’s Rann govt embarassed at $million cost likely from its court defeat regarding uranium protestors. Confusion in the uranium mining lobby, as prices tumble. Even more confusion about the Nuclear Security Summit plan to promote recycled uranium. Meanwhile ANSTO salivates at the thought of setting up a lucrative nuclear waste management business, and ANSTO’s baby, Silex promotes its dangerous laser nuclear technology.

International: Some 20 countries or more join up to Nuclear security Summit plan to send their enriched uranium to USA  or to Russia, for recycling.  Anxiety over earthquake risks in this plan.  Much confusion over Recycling, Reprocessing, Fast Breeder Reactors, Integral Fast Reactors.  Nuclear lobby gears up, with AREVA promoting its products at Nuclear Security Summit.  More nuclear power promotion for upcoming Non-Proliferation talks. India grappling with problem of nuclear insurance, and of a dramatic radiation exposure incident

Can we trust nuclear scientists to tell the truth about nuclear technology?

Yes, it’s all very exciting. Obama’s Nuclear Security Summit has made some moves in the direction of nuclear security.

And, yes, it’s a blow to uranium mining shares, now that old weapons fuel is going to be turned into low enriched uranium, and sold cheaply as fuel for nuclear reactors.

BUT – what an opportunity for nuclear scientists, like say ANSTO,  to spruik their wares –  in recycling, reprocessing technology! And now we’re gonna need some gee-whiz answer to highly radioactive wastes –  like say  ANSTO ‘s  Synroc. (Never mind that all countries decided over 30 years ago that it really wouldn’t work)

ANSTO Partnering with French Nuclear Agency

Is it not odd that the nuclear powers that be, are going ahead with new nuclear reactor projects, that are not only untested, but, it is openly admitted, for which there is  no nuclear waste solution.!

Generation IV reactor systems are also being developed which will require new nuclear waste solutions.

Ansto bolsters research collaboration, World Nuclear News, 15 March 2010 .The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization (Ansto) has widened its nuclear research cooperation with the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), as well as signing an agreement with an Australian university to conduct research into the storage of radioactive waste. requiring ANSTO to store its own waste is the best — and perhaps the only — way of focusing the organisation’s collective mind on the importance of waste minimisation principles.

Impossible to dump nuclear waste on white Australians’ land

ANSTO executive Steven McIntosh said …“We cannot really comment upon that policy process [of siting remote dumps]…….. but politics frankly was the determining factor.”

How to site a nuclear waste dump – Crikey.

by Bernard Keane

22 February 2010 Apart from the dispute between traditional owners, there’s a more fundamental question of why remote areas are preferred for nuclear waste dumps. The prerequisites routinely mentioned – geological stability and distance from groundwater – can readily be achieved elsewhere, without the expense and danger of transporting nuclear waste thousands of kilometres.
